An organization dedicated to increasing the return of wild
steelhead to the waters of the Pacific Northwest

Vice President of Education , Chris Grieve

I was born in Yakima Washington, and grew up in Snohomish. I started fishing for trout in the local lakes with my Dad at a very early age. Later, we spent weekends fishing for salmon in Puget Sound. I learned to fly fish for trout shortly after starting my first job after college. Soon after, I gained a passion for catching big fish on a fly. My first steelhead was a fly caught Skykomish River native.

My involvement with steelhead management started in the late 1990’s when I became aware of large harvest rates of wild steelhead on the Skagit River system. I contacted the WDFW and was told that the return rates of wild steelhead in the Skagit River where high enough to sustain the large harvest. The following year the Skagit River, Sauk River, Skykomish River and Stillaguamish Rivers were closed due to low escapement of wild steelhead. My involvement with the WSC followed shortly after.

“When I am not orchestrating aircraft structures design projects for Boeing, I am fishing or guiding for steelhead or salmon on the Skagit, Sky, or Sauk Rivers. In my free time, I am either building or fixing something around the farm with my wife, Julie, or playing with my dog Kyra, our two year old Dalmatian.

I have been involved with the WSC since the second meeting in the O.B. Williams Co. woodshop in downtown Seattle. During that first year I helped collect data from the WDFW for the first WSC white paper. (What an eye opening experience!) Since then, I have attended as many membership meetings as possible and kept myself involved in the regulation changes during the WDFW major cycle rule change years. I also donate guided trips to the WSC auction and to the auctions of other environmental organizations.

Starting January 2007, I am the VP of Education for the WSC. I hope to be able to spread the word about wild steelhead conservation as others had done before me.
